Well, Thailand is a great place to learn lots of interesting stuff, so lets have a look at some things you could Learn to do here.

All the courses we have suggested are in English. Some are also available in other languages.

1. Learn To Fly

Fancy skimming over the treetops in a microlight? Or zooming through the clouds in a Cessna? Or may be you fancy yourself as a commercial airline pilot.

1. Bangkok Aviation Center

BAC Open house 2019

Bangkok Aviation Center is set up to train you properly to get a pilots licence for not just light aircraft, but potentially to help you get a commercial pilots licence too.

Despite it’s name, BAC is not in Bangkok but has training centers in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) province, close to the city’s airport, and in Nakhon Nayok province (Klong 15) where they have their own airstrip as well as pilot training facilities.

The Nakhon Nayok center is only about 1.5 hours from Bangkok by road.

They have 38 light aircraft of various types, aircraft simulators, and a separate aircraft mechanics training unit.

A basic private pilots licence course takes about 6 months, which includes 43 hours of flight training and 126 hours of ground training.

2. Autogyro Lessons

If you’re looking for a unusual experience you can learn to fly an autogyro, which is a rather different type of aircraft.

A full series of lessons takes about 20 hours in Sri Ratcha in eastern Thailand. Sadly however, you won’t get a flying licence.

3. Chopper Away

Everyone loves the thrill of flying in a helicopter, and you could get a private helicopter pilots licence in just 20 weeks.

The Thai Civil Aviation department offer courses in the lovely surroundings of Hua Hin.

2. Learn To Box

50 Muay Thai Knockouts That Define An Era

Of course when we say ‘Learn to Box’ we mean Muay Thai, that most devastating of martial arts.

Thailand has hundreds of Muay Thai camps around the country, with varying degrees of training competence and equipment.

The training alone is damn hard work and a constant high level of fitness is essential through regular workouts. Long early morning runs are usually a basic part of it too.

The sport itself -- and don’t forget it’s a martial art too -- is violent and aggressive and very different from ‘western’ boxing.

We don’t endorse or recommend any particular training camps. The following places are purely for information, so please ask around for professional advice.

1. Khongsittha Gym

A Tour in Khongsittha Muay Thai Gym in Bangkok by Richi Alvarez

This gym has two competitive sized rings, a large open training area, a functional training section, an ice bath, and clean locker rooms.

They have accommodation, and offer training facilities to any age range, and to those with zero, some, or a lot of experience.

2. Po Silaphai Gym

Por silaphai Thai Boxing Gym in Chiang Mai.

Po Silaphai is fully licenced and close to the center of Chiangmai city in northern Thailand.

They provide professional training packages ranging from one day to one month, which include accommodation and some fun activities.

If you’re in Chiangmai on a trip, or even living there, and looking a place to train for fitness or to become a professional fighter, they have the right package for you.

3. Amazing Muay Thai Gym

We’re not sure how amazing this gym is, but it seems to get some good reviews.

Located close to the lovely beach resort town of Hua Hin, about 3-4 hours south of Bangkok,it’s a great environment to train in.

They offer the full spectrum of training, from basic fitness right through to match fighting. Four trainers are on hand to take you through each step.

3. Learn To Sail

Fancy sailing the Seven Seas with the salt spray in your face and the wind in your sails?

Sailing can be a superb experience that gives you a sense of fun and freedom on the water, but you do need to know what you’re doing.

1. Island Spirit

Island Spirit - Zero to Hero – Fast-track to Bareboat Skipper course

Island Spirit has everything you need, from ‘taster’ lessons to see how you might like it, all the way through to advanced techniques.

They have bases in Pattaya and Phuket, and they include accommodation in their lesson packages.

‘Introduction to Sailing’ shows you the pleasures of sailing in a short two day program.

It’s an ideal starter program for the working person with limited recreation time, the retired expat looking for a new hobby, and the tourist looking for an adventure.

The Pattaya base is at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, 167/5 Moo 4, Sukhumvit Highway (Km157), Na Jomtien, Sattahip district, Chonburi province.

2. Sail In Asia

Based in Phuket with another base in Krabi, Sail in Asia are regarded as Thailand’s most comprehensive watersports activity company.

They offer an IYT sailing school, corporate training and team building, an outdoor education center and yacht charters.

Their three choice ‘Zero to Hero’ are fast track courses to get from learner to skipper safely in the shortest time possible.

‘Zero to Hero’ is ideal for new boat owners, aspiring crew members, and anyone who wants to get sailing quickly.

3. Sailing Koh Tao

This training center based on the pretty island of Koh Tao takes a different approach for beginners.

They recommend learning the basics in sailing dinghies, which they say is a fast way to progress through the skill levels.

This is what they say: “Dinghy sailing gives you the perfect foothold from which to develop your skills as a sailor.

If your plan is to learn to sail and eventually go on to buy a bigger vessel, our dinghies and tuition will give you a sound understanding of how to use the wind and the practical ocean training to get you moving. It’s great fun too!”.

4. Learn To Cook

Some of the tastiest food on the planet is cooked on the streets of Thailand. You can learn to turn out these delicious dishes in the comfort of a good cooking school.

Some of the schools also offer courses in other cuisines, so we’ve got you covered.

1. Thai Chef School

Licensed by the Ministry of Education, Thai Chef School has an interesting variety of diploma classes covering Thai cuisine, Pan Asian dishes, western food, and Pastries.

Even if, like me, you know nothing about cuisine, by the end of your course you’ll be preparing and presenting some very tasty and elegant dishes.

If you’re thinking of a career as a chef, they have more advanced courses, and a hotel internship program.

2. Aroy Aroy

“Aroy” means delicious, and that’s what the end game is in learning to cook Thai food.

Aroy Aroy is Chiangmai’s only purpose built Thai cooking school, with a cosy ambiance of a home

They will pick you up from your hotel or home in central Chiangmai and whisk you away to a fun 5 hours of lessons from qualified chefs.

They say this about themselves: “Our Chiang Mai cooking school offers first class facilities, ingredients, chefs / instructors as well as the highest levels of hygiene and cleanliness.

Our chefs are steeped in the history and tradition of cooking Thailand’s exotic assortment of dishes that have become sought after and enjoyed throughout the world.”

3. Phuket Cooking Academy

Phuket Cooking Academy

Whether you’re passionate about food or just looking for a fun experience, Phuket Cooking Academy has something for everyone.

Licensed by the Ministry of Education, this school teaches Thai, western, and bakery skills in daily or longer sessions during the morning or evening.

Classes include three different menus to prepare from Monday to Saturday. Each lesson includes complete dishes from soup to dessert, recipe sheets and much more.

5. Learn To Know Gems

Thailand has long been a center of gems processing and trading, both with locally mined gems and those from neighbouring countries.

Qualifying on some of these courses could be the start of an exciting and lucrative career!

1. Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences

AIGS Gem Identification course (2014)

This well established gemological institute is set in Bangkok’s Gem District, and is widely respected.

The study of gems is an intensive and long term effort beginning with a basic six month Accredited Gemologist course, leading on through further courses to degree level proficiency.

AIGS say this about their basic course:

“The six-month Accredited Gemologist program emphasizes the practical gemstone identification and synthetic/treatment detection skills required to become a proficient gemologist in today’s gem and jewelry industry, as well as providing a solid grounding in the commercial aspects of grading and valuation.

In addition to classroom-based theoretical and practical instruction, students are given the opportunity to visit various gem mining localities, jewelry production facilities and gemstone trading hubs throughout Thailand, as well as further afield in Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Vietnam.”

If you have a serious interest in gemology, this is the place to head for.

2. Institute of Gem Trading

Through the Eyes of a Gem Cutter - Institute of Gem Trading

The Institute of Gem Trading offers unique courses relating to the gemstone industry which reveal some of the industry’s secrets.

A hands-on approach includes topics like the analysis of rough gems, gemstone cutting, running a gemstone business, etc.

All the courses are modular and can be taken individually, or as a series to complete their Gem Trading Fundamentals Program.
